Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Until the 1960s, Puerto del Carmen was a small fishing village in the southeast, which only had a few houses on today’s port area. In the direction of the airport there was a salt plant and otherwise only free area where it was difficult to grow fruit or vegetables. What the famous Playa Grande looked like in the 1960s can be seen very impressively here. Harbour in Puerto del Carmen Today Puerto del Carmen is the largest and most important tourist centre on the island of Lanzarote, with over 960,000 tourists a year (as of 2017, source tourismodeislascanarias.com). If you want the beach and nightlife as close to your door as possible, you should choose a holiday home in Puerto del Carmen. On a length of approx. 6 km you will surely find the suitable beach, in the evening the right restaurant and at night the best disco or bar. The largest beaches are Playa Grande, Playa de Los Pocillos and adjacent to the airport is Playa de Matagorda. There are various sports facilities, such as windsurfing, diving, sailing, deep sea fishing, boat trips and much more. Near the harbour is the beach Playa Chica, especially suitable for children, with diving school and boat trips next door. Slightly hidden, opposite the La Penita area, between Playa Grande and Playa de Los Pocillos, there are some other bathing opportunities that are not so easy to discover from the road and which are best explored on foot from Avenida de las Playas. On the Avenida de las Playas, one restaurant practically alternates with Centros Comerciales – Shopping Centers. In between you will find boutiques, supermarkets, amusement arcades, car rentals and of course also various souvenir and often rather junk shops. The Sunday market in Teguise or Saturdays in Haria are much better places to buy souvenirs. Above the Avenida, near the port, there is one of the largest and most modern shopping centres in Lanzarote, the “Biosfera-Plaza”, with free underground parking. At Zara, Mango, Bershka, Foot Looker etc. you can shop here to your heart’s content or visit the open air cinema with English and Spanish movies. . You can satisfy hunger and thirst in numerous restaurants with great views of the hustle and bustle and the sea. The port of Puerto del Carmen, also known as La Tiñosa from former times, is 5 minutes’ walk from Biosfera to the south. Here you will find fishing boats and excursion boats, numerous authentic fish restaurants and, especially at the weekend at late hours, lively bars invite you to linger. The restaurant Casa Roja, which was built in 1850 and served as a harbour camp until the 1950s, is particularly outstanding. From the port, a footpath leads along the cliffs of Puerto del Carmen towards Barranco del Quiquere and on to Puerto Calero, the nearest town further south with its marina.

The Ironman Lanzarote takes place in Puerto del Carmen in May every year. A must see event if you are on the island during the second half of May.

Towns and Villages
Playa Quemada Beach

Playa Quemada / Playa de la Arena on Lanzarote

On the road from Macher towards Uga, a sign shows the access road to one of the most peaceful places in Lanzarote: Playa Quemada, managed by the municipality of Yaiza.

After about 3 km you reach the village, which ends in the east with the, approximately 300 meters long, “Playa Quemada” beach of the same name.

Because of the calm water the conditions for bathing here are optimal, even if the Playa de la Arena, which is located southwest of Playa Quemada, with dark brown gravel, has better conditions, like the village beach “Playa Quemada”, mainly consisting of black sand and lava rocks.

Cliffs and the mountains in the background offer the visitor in any case a particularly imposing backdrop.

The “Playa de la Arena” beach, you can reach at low tide over the rocks at the sea, and at high tide over a footpath over the Cape.

For families with small children and handicapped people the beaches of Playa Quemada are not particularly suitable.

In Playa Quemada you find ample parking spaces, a small supermarket and several restaurants.
Sunbeds and sunshades, beach showers or a first station is not to be found.

Particularly peace-seeking idealists appreciate the special advantages of this secluded beach.

Beware of the tides and note that you have to take the way over the hills to get back to Playa Quemada when the tide is high and you are at the beach “Playa de la Arena”.

Bring your own food and drinks as there is only nature and peace at the beach of Playa Quemada.

Restaurante Maritoni, Puerto del Carmen

Restaurante Maritoni in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

It is not easy to find the right restaurant in the middle of the numerous restaurants at the Avenida de las Playas next to the beach in Puerto del Carmen.

A secret advice could be this: Restaurante Maritoni in Puerto del Carmen.

However, “secret” is perhaps the wrong term, because many guests visit this restaurant during their holidays several times. Even if the restaurant does not stand out from the crowd due to a huge illuminated sign or a huge sun terrace, you will soon realise that you are right. Many guests are in and in front of the small room. Thus, you may have to wait some minutes for a table. But it is definitely worth it.

If the bar of Restaurante Maritoni is already filled with waiting guests, you can go a few doors further in the bar called Sea View to have beer, wine or something similar. In both locations the spanish team of Toni welcomes you. They all speak english perfectly and also a little bit of german. When your table is ready, they will keep you up from Sea View Bar.

The restaurant Maritoni has existed since the early 1990er. That is special in this street of so many restaurants.

You will find a traditional spanish cuisine that serves you fresh fish, several meals of beef, pig or chicken as well as veggetarian dishes.

If you are not sure about the taste of the dishes, then certainly the fair value for money will convince you.

Or the location at the beach promenade in Puerto del Carmen on Lanzarote.

You may have to walk a bit to reach the restaurant Maritoni because it is not easy to get a parking close to it. But the walk will also helpful afterwards because don’t think that the portions are small…

El Chupadero

Restaurant El Chupadero in the Vineyard La Geria on Lanzarote

This is for me an absolute must go when passing through the winegrowing area La Geria. El Chupadero has been here for many years and celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2016. It has seen the good and the not so good times in these magical surroundings. Having yet not being connected to the electricity network by the electricity supplier, the landlady, Barbara Hendriks, has created a very special ambience. The Full Moon Parties which used to take place here have achieved legendary status. Creative events like concerts with unusal musicians, dinners with classical music and cool DJ House Party have now been added to the program. But you shouldn’t miss a daytime visit either. The view from the terrace across the volcanic mountains as far as Timanfaya National Parc is amazing and should not be missed. Typical tapas are prepared fresh everyday and are served beautifully.

You can try a great range of the wines of the region. If you are looking for a pristine place on this island, then the El Chupadero is surely an enriching experience. This is a place of calm and serenity, away from the million investments of the neighbouring Stratus and Rubicón bodegas. If you want to make sure that a coach full of tourists does not cross your path, then this is the right place as tour groups are not accepted here. You might find that other bodegas along the wine road between Uga and San Bartolomé suddenly get very noisy and overcrowded by a group of tourists. This will not happen here.

Important to reserve a table on days of event.

Look out for extra events. Very good live music events, usually once a week. Also very famous for legendary Full-Moon-Parties.

If you like the ambiance of the spot, you can ask Barbara the owner also for private arrangements as weddings and birthdays.
