Playa Blanca – Lanzarote

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Via the LZ 701 you reach Playa Blanca, the most southern town of Lanzarote.

This former fishing village has become a regular tourism centre especially for English tourists.

The “Marina Rubicón” port is a good starting point for an excursion because it has a wealth of free and easily accessible parking spaces.

Take a look at the marvellous yachts that have docked in the harbour and enjoy the touch of luxury that is in the air and in the surroundings of Marina Rubicón with its sporting and culinary offerings.

The beach promenade takes you directly to the tourist centre of Playa Blanca passing through hotels of the upscale category that line the path. One or the other park bench invites you to linger.

The artificial sand beach Playa Dorada is ideal for a short break and a jump into the cool water and offers with a multitude of free play devices also enough space for the little ones.

Harbour Playa Blanca 5

In Playa Blanca itself you will find a big variety of international restaurants and shopping possibilities.

At the old port are only a few small fishing boats to be found. Instead, large ferries navigating to Fuerteventura or the Playas de Papagayo now dominate the image of the port.

Especially if you want to see Lanzarote apart from your holiday apartment and the adjacent beach of Playa Blanca, you should rent a car.

You can find a holiday accommodation in Playa Blanca right here.

Within Playa Blanca, close to larger hotels and apartment complexes, there are the two sandy beaches Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo, particularly suitable for families.

You can reach the famous Papagayo beaches by bike or by an extensive walk from the town centre about 7 km to the north-east or via a convenient toll road by car (€ 3,- / car).

In order to visit the places, beaches and sights to the north of Playa Blanca, you should rent a car anyway, at least a few days. We can gladly arrange for you from particularly reliable and nevertheless cheap car hire companies.

In only approx. 15 – 30 minutes driving time or within approx. 12 – 25km you reach the salt works of Janubio and the black beach with the same name. Via Los Hervideros you get to the fishing village El Golfo with the green lagoon and some good fish restaurants. Romantic sunsets by the sea are included. More targets are the beautiful village of Yaiza, where the municipal administration of Playa Blanca is situated, the famous fire mountains or a wine tasting in the nearby La Geria wine-growing area.

In order to enjoy the beaches of Puerto del Carmen, Arrecife or the former capiatal Teguise or in the north of the island, in the valley of the 1000 palm trees, Haría, and other places of interest, you should at least count half a day or even better several day trips. The car hire offers you a map showing the most important sights you should not miss on your Lanzarote holiday.

From Playa Blanca you can also reach mostly well-visible neighbouring island Fuerteventura. You get there by ferry (Lineas ARMAS or Fred Olsen line) in about 25 – 35 minutes. The ferries leave daily several times from the signposted port of Playa Blanca.

Restaurant Mar Azul, El Golfo

Restaurant Mar Azul in El Golfo, Lanzarote

This restaurant is located in the small fishermen’s village El Golfo. The main road of El Golfo leads you down to coastline where you will find Mar Azul. The restaurant Mar Azul is located on the street, but there are also tables facing the sea on the other side of the road. A beautiful sunset is offered to you every evening since the sky is not cloudy. Fish and particularly the “Calamari a la plancha” are recommended. The specialty of the house is Caldoso. Caldoso is a succulent rice dish with seafood such as lobster, crayfish or king prawns.

Before your dinner you could visit the famous lago verde at the entrance to El Golfo and the beautiful coastal area around.

Please do not order a “fish plate”, but rather one fish. Otherwise make clear, in case of doubt with hands and feet, that you first want to look at the fish in the kitchen. Fish plates are served in all restaurants with the fish that is cheaper.

El Golfo

El Golfo, Lanzarote

El Golfo is situated in southwest of Lanzarote. This small fishing village is known for its tasty fish specialities and the natura attraction “lago verde“. Fish is caught, gutted and cleaned right in front of your eyes, very much to the joy of the sea gulls who happily treat themselves to the leftovers. There is a small footpath at the end of the village, which leads across lava rock all along the cliffs. Sturdy footwear is absolutely necessary here.
However, the absolute highlight is the magnificent sun set. Accompanied by a glass of delicious wine from Lanzarote, it lets you just simply forget everything.

“Los Hervideros”, “Lago Verde” or “La Lagna de los Clicos” in El Golfo are one of the most beautiful places of the island, without any doubt one of the Must See of Lanzarote.

Playa Quemada Beach

Playa Quemada / Playa de la Arena on Lanzarote

On the road from Macher towards Uga, a sign shows the access road to one of the most peaceful places in Lanzarote: Playa Quemada, managed by the municipality of Yaiza.

After about 3 km you reach the village, which ends in the east with the, approximately 300 meters long, “Playa Quemada” beach of the same name.

Because of the calm water the conditions for bathing here are optimal, even if the Playa de la Arena, which is located southwest of Playa Quemada, with dark brown gravel, has better conditions, like the village beach “Playa Quemada”, mainly consisting of black sand and lava rocks.

Cliffs and the mountains in the background offer the visitor in any case a particularly imposing backdrop.

The “Playa de la Arena” beach, you can reach at low tide over the rocks at the sea, and at high tide over a footpath over the Cape.

For families with small children and handicapped people the beaches of Playa Quemada are not particularly suitable.

In Playa Quemada you find ample parking spaces, a small supermarket and several restaurants.
Sunbeds and sunshades, beach showers or a first station is not to be found.

Particularly peace-seeking idealists appreciate the special advantages of this secluded beach.

Beware of the tides and note that you have to take the way over the hills to get back to Playa Quemada when the tide is high and you are at the beach “Playa de la Arena”.

Bring your own food and drinks as there is only nature and peace at the beach of Playa Quemada.

El Chupadero

Restaurant El Chupadero in the Vineyard La Geria on Lanzarote

This is for me an absolute must go when passing through the winegrowing area La Geria. El Chupadero has been here for many years and celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2016. It has seen the good and the not so good times in these magical surroundings. Having yet not being connected to the electricity network by the electricity supplier, the landlady, Barbara Hendriks, has created a very special ambience. The Full Moon Parties which used to take place here have achieved legendary status. Creative events like concerts with unusal musicians, dinners with classical music and cool DJ House Party have now been added to the program. But you shouldn’t miss a daytime visit either. The view from the terrace across the volcanic mountains as far as Timanfaya National Parc is amazing and should not be missed. Typical tapas are prepared fresh everyday and are served beautifully.

You can try a great range of the wines of the region. If you are looking for a pristine place on this island, then the El Chupadero is surely an enriching experience. This is a place of calm and serenity, away from the million investments of the neighbouring Stratus and Rubicón bodegas. If you want to make sure that a coach full of tourists does not cross your path, then this is the right place as tour groups are not accepted here. You might find that other bodegas along the wine road between Uga and San Bartolomé suddenly get very noisy and overcrowded by a group of tourists. This will not happen here.

Important to reserve a table on days of event.

Look out for extra events. Very good live music events, usually once a week. Also very famous for legendary Full-Moon-Parties.

If you like the ambiance of the spot, you can ask Barbara the owner also for private arrangements as weddings and birthdays.
