Playa del Risco Beach

Playa del Risco Beach near Haria, Lanzarote

Lanzarote’s most remote beach, well known by name, is the 1300 metre long Playa del Risco Beach with its fine light coloured sand.

The beach is accessible, either by boat or by walking down a dramatic footpath, from a parking lot near the village of Ye, altitude 580 meters.

After a 45 minute descent, energetic adventurers are greatly rewarded by an indescribably romantic and solitary setting.

The island of La Graciosa protects this beach from some of the prevailing wind which acts as a cooling effect, as experienced by all the northwest coast of Lanzarote. While swimming at Playa del Risco beach is not recommended, it is a totally natural beach without any developments to detract from the unspoiled scenery, save a few power lines that serve La Graciosa.

To the North, you can still see the remains of the original sea salt distillation ponds.

When visiting Playa del Risco, you should take enough food and drink with you. It’s best you buy before arriving in Ye, perhaps in Arrieta or Haria. Allow twice as long as your descent time to return back up the steep path to your car.

Playa de Janubio Beach

Playa de Janubio Beach near Yaiza, Lanzarote

On the way from Yaiza towards Playa Blanca, after approx. 6 km drive, you reach the 800 meters long, black natural beach Playa de Janubio, directly adjacent to the Salinas de Janubio.
The distance from Playa Blanca to Playa de Janubio is about 8 km.

From the old road of Playa Blanca heading to Yaiza, there is one car park and access on one side of this beach and after having passed the salt pans of Janubio towards Los Hervideros, a 2nd access and parking on the north side can be found.

Because of usually quite high waves and strong currents, however, this beach most days of the year is mainly only recommended for very good swimmers. It is rather an ideal place for sunbathing, relaxing, then for bathing with smaller children.
At the Playa de Janubio beach there are of course no sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, no public toilets or even showers, no restaurant or supermarket and also no first aid station.
There are allways, even in the high season enough parking spaces.
It is a great place to visit the nearby salt marshes nearby, aswell while you are here.

Climbing along the coast in the direction to Playa Blanca, you will pass small natural tubs, which have been created by wind and weather over the millennia.
It can easy happen, that you get frightened by fleeing hand-sized crabs, who are equally frightened as visitors are quite rare.

At Playa de Janubio Beach, strollers who like to look for the green olives, which can be found here in larger quantities and where one knows handmade jewelery, can be met.
The jewelery offered on the markets on lanzarote, decorated with olivine, are mostly imported from Asian countries.

Professional photographers like to use the harsh scenery at Playa de Janubio for their fashion photography.
At Playa de Janubio Beach, you can definitely experience a particularly memorable day with a romantic sunset, similar to the famous El Golfo sunsets, which is located further north on the coast.

Natural Beach!
At the Playa de Janubio beach are no sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, no public toilets or even showers, no restaurant or supermarket and also no first aid station. Just beautiful nature.

Los Hervideros

Los Hervideros, beautiful volcanic coastline on Lanzarote

Continuing on your trip from Salinas de Janubio to El Golfo or the other way round you come to the next attraction, Los Hervideros, where you can stop at one of the many small bays along a coastline full of nooks and crannies. Park your car at Los Hervideros and admire this miracle of nature. For centuries the sea has eroded the lava at this point. Stand on the cliff, taste the salt in the air and let the wind blow through your hair, as you enjoy the view of the turquoise water crashing against the cliffs.

Take in mind that it can be busy at the big parking area next to Los Hervideros due to the fact that big touristic buses do also stop over here.

Cueva de las Cabras

View Point Cueva de las Cabras (Risco de Famara), Lanzarote

An amazing view point is offered to you apart from a tarred road at the cliffs of Risco de Famara. Cueva de las Cabras has also received a google marker and although the path to this point is difficult you can reach it with your car. Above the cliffs you will a have a broad view from La Graciosa over the Atlantic Ocean to the Beach of Famara and over a large area of the southern Landscape of Lanzarote. Your are very close to the clouds and when they are not there this “Mirador” is a great place to enjoy a sunset on Lanzarote.

The last hundred meters to the view point is just a path and there are no lights.

Barranco del Quiquere Cliffs

Barranco del Quiquere cliffs

On the footpath between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero, after about 1.5 km, this section called Barranco del Quiquere cliff is about 800 m long and offers secluded bays, sunbathing areas and hidden caves.
With a view of the neighboring Fuerteventura nature lovers, who like to swim or snorkel, can spend a wonderful time.
The Barranco del Quiquere area is also particularly popular with naturists.

Like mostly on the south-east coast, the Barranco del Quiquere usually has only a few waves.
From the top of the cliffs, a staircase and to the north and south other, more risky climbing passages are leading down to the water, where you can find and choose your quiet and  more or less hidden spot for your stay.

Entering the water partly is not very easy and the wearing of bathing shoes is rather recommended because of the occasional sea urchins. As the access to the sea, by climbing over rocks and gravel, is quite challenging, this bathing area is rather less suitable for handicapped people and for families with children.

To get to the Barranco del Quiquere by car, turn off the road between the villages of Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero after about 1.5 km on the unpaved road towards the sea.
At the end of the path, which after a heavy rainfall sometimes till it gets repaired seems quite risky to drive further, you will arrive at a parking lot, from where after a distance of about 200 meters you arrive above the cliffs.

From there, you can then look out  for your very special spot for your stay.

Divers find and like to use the ideal conditions at the Barranco del Quiquere, too.
Otherwise there is not much more at the Barranco del Quiquere. No sunbeds or umbrellas, no toilets, no trash bins and also no first aid station, only crystal clear water, pure nature and often also hardly other visitors awaits you there.

Don’t forget to bring your bathing shoes and your drinks and your food
