Solo – Israel Galván

Solo – Israel Galván

Contemporary dance | Flamenco

All by himself, Israel Galván explores the possibilities of his natural dancing in ‘Solo’. He’s well-known for his choreographic skills, and after having tried out solo dancing with no music coming from the most classic flamenco, the dancer brings this concept to the extreme which results in a completely avant-garde experience. Galván follows on Vicente Escudero’s steps, whom he looks up to, and who also danced with no music almost 100 years ago. The artist exposes himself and shows what he’s really made of. On stage there are no microphones, or backing singers, in “Solo”, Galván, makes music by listening to his own body, using the beat of his feet, snapping his fingers and even at times using his voice. A great chance to see how rich his repertoire is and how varied the unique language created by the artist who has opened the door to a new world of possibilities for flamenco in the 21st Century.

Dulces bestias – contemporary dance

Compañía Nómada brings the contemporary dance piece Dulces Bestias (Sweet Beasts) to Jameos del Agua Auditorium, recent winner of five Canary Islands Performing Arts Replica Awards in 2018, the best performance of the year according to these awards.

Dulces Bestias reflects on the animal aspects humans have inherited, using animal attributes to transcend its own condition and overcome difficulties posed by nature. Roberto Torres, director and choreographer of the show, explains that, “today we’re living in a noise and asphalt jungle, with other “sweet beasts”…and we somehow yearn for a nature we are part of, and that we seem to be parting with more and more every day”.

The fur costumes designed by Yaiza Pinillos, Nature represented by Samuel Aguilar’s music, lighting by Grace Morales, and the “beasts” played by Paula Quintana, Daniel Morales and Paloma Hurtado, expressing their animality as they show their humbleness when faced with Nature itself.

The music, composed and performed by Samuel Aguilar,  also aims to connect with nature and become a metaphor of its sounds that are becoming more and more forgotten and unknown.
